Guidance regarding COVID-19

Given the recent developments in regard to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the following measures have been put in place at our parish. This advice should be considered alongside local and national health guidance, including from the Commonwealth Department of Health and is consistent with the Catholic Church’s prerogative to protect those who are most vulnerable.

Holy Water

  • Holy Water has been temporarily removed from the baptismal font in the narthex.

Rite of Peace

  • When exchanging the Sign of Peace, individuals are advised to avoid shaking hands but are encouraged to say “Peace be with you” and offer a smile, wave, nod or bow.

Holy Communion

  • The distribution of Holy Communion from the Chalice has been ceased until further notice. The faithful is reminded that Christ is fully present under either species.
  • The Body of Christ is only administered in the hand because of the high risk of transmission if people continue to receive on the tongue.

Divine Worship

  • Parishioners who are too unwell to attend Sunday Mass – whether due to novel coronavirus or some other condition – or are at particular risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus, can honour their Sunday obligation by participating in a time of prayer within the home, reading the Scriptures or watching Mass on television or online (http://bit.ly/MassOnDemand).

General preventatives

  • The parish has temporarily ceased visiting and distributing communion at Donvale Rehab, and aged care centres Millward, Greenview Allity, and Doncaster Manor.
  • Morning tea after Sunday mass will cease temporarily from 22nd March 2020.
  • Individuals should consider their own health, including any potential to infect others with a contagious disease, before attending a public liturgical celebration.
  • The Commonwealth Department of Health has prepared a collection of resources for the general public, health professionals and industry about coronavirus (COVID-19), including translated resources (Simplified or Traditional Chinese, Farsi, Italian and Korean).
